Common Mistakes English Learners Make

(And How to Fix Them!)

2 min read

Learning English is a big adventure, and mistakes are a natural part of the journey. 🌟
Many English learners, especially those whose native language is very different from English, often face similar challenges.

Today, let's explore a few common mistakes — and some easy ways to fix them!

1. Forgetting to Use Articles (a, an, the)

In some languages, articles like "a" and "the" don’t exist — so it’s easy to forget them in English!
For example:
❌ "I bought car yesterday."
✅ "I bought a car yesterday."

Tip: Most singular nouns need "a" or "an" unless you are talking about something very specific ("the car we talked about").

2. Mixing Up "L" and "R"

Many learners find it difficult to pronounce "L" and "R" clearly because their first language doesn't make a strong difference between the two sounds.
But in English, "light" and "right" sound very different.

Tip: Practice slowly — for "L," lightly touch the tip of your tongue behind your teeth. For "R," curl your tongue back slightly without touching the top of your mouth.

3. Forgetting "s" with He/She/It

It’s easy to say "My friend go to school," but in English, the verb changes when talking about he, she, or it.
Correct sentence: "My friend goes to school."

Tip:
He, she, it — don’t forget the s!

4. Directly Translating from Your Native Language

Sometimes translating word-for-word can create unusual English sentences.
For example:
❌ "My condition is bad."
✅ "I'm not feeling well."

When learning a new language, it's important to put your native language aside and only think in the language you are learning

Final Thoughts

Mistakes show that you are learning, growing, and trying — and that's something to be proud of! 🥰
When you understand these common challenges, it becomes easier to speak more naturally and confidently.
